Management Strategies

Preventative Strategies

  1. Teach and enforce routines and procedures

Creating routines and procedures gives students the tools to know what to do in the classroom. This lessens the opportunity for talking or off task behavior when they know what is expected of them.

   2. Role play

Role playing situations that might come up in the classroom will help students know what to do in real life. This can avoid disruptive behavior and fighting.

   3. Have enough materials and lessons for the day/ lesson

Making sure there is no free time for students to go wild will decrease behavior issues. Students who are busy are less likely to misbehave.

   4. Make sure that transitions are purposeful and smooth

When transitioning, it is important that it is short and purposeful to avoid wasting time.

5.Reward students who are on task

By recognizing students who are on task, students who may not be on task or are starting to lose focus may come back to the lesson in hopes of being recognized as well.

   6.Have strong attention getting signals

Attention getting signals are good to have when students are in small groups and are talking, but you need to tell the whole class something. This will bring the class quickly together in order to avoid wasting time or the class getting under control.

   7. Give students designated time to move around and talk

If students have time to move around and talk, they will most likely be more focused during lessons when they are not supposed to be moving around or talking.

   8. Have a noise meter

When students are able to have a way to monitor themselves, they then can take that responsibility away from the teacher.

   9. Create a community within the classroom

From the beginning of the school year, take time to create a community within the classroom. This will make everyone feel more comfortable and know each other better. If students have a foundation of respect for each other and the teacher, there will be less disruptions and arguments.

   10. Send good notes home

Let parents know when the class has been behaving well. Parents will most likely congratulate their child which will encourage the child to keep on following expectations.

Responsive Strategies

  1. Write a reflection of behavior

When students get out of control, writing a reflection of what happened can make them see what they did and why they did it. This can help them become more aware in the future.

   2.Conference with teacher

When the problem is persistent, conferencing with a teacher can be helpful in identifying the problem. The teacher is able to hear the child’s side of the story and potentially make adjustments in the classroom.

   3. Reteach routine or procedure

If the class is not remembering a routine or procedure, then it is time to reteach and reinforce.

   4. Have a whole class discussion

As a class, talk about the problem and remind them that their behavior is not what is expected in the classroom.

   5. Role play

While this can be a preventative strategy, it can also be used as a responsive strategy. If there is a specific persistent problem, role playing can help show students what is expected of them.

   6. Have students brainstorm ways to fix the management problem

If students are having problems with something, they can brainstorm ways to fix the problem. This shows they are responsible for their actions before and after.

   7. Change seating

If students are doing an assignment and sitting throughout the room, but then get out of hand, they will go back to their seats and do their work there.

   8. Small steps

When there is a problem in the classroom, move in small steps until you reach the final desired expectation. It is much easier for students to modify their behavior slowly than all at once.

   9. Do a community building exercise

If students are having trouble behaving, give the class a team building exercise to help strengthen the community of the classroom.

   10. Collaborate with Colleagues

Talk with peers about other strategies they can recommend for specific situations.
